01 Profile

Designing map interfaces that hold up in the field

Ten years spent between cartography, interface design and the data pipelines underneath them. I work best where a map is the product rather than a decorative layer — shoreline atlases, grid monitoring, route and wayfinding systems.

My practice runs end to end: interviewing the surveyors and operators who will use the thing, shaping the data model with engineers, then designing and building the front end so the cartographic intent survives implementation. I write production TypeScript and SQL, which keeps design decisions honest about what the data can actually support.

I care about legibility under bad conditions — low bandwidth, bright sun, a tablet in a dry bag, a screen reader. Accessible, printable, and readable offline are design requirements in my work, not late additions.

02 Selected work

Three projects that describe the practice

Public atlas · Regional conservancy

Coastal Drift Atlas

A public web atlas showing how a stretch of coastline has moved across six decades of survey data. I led the cartographic system, the time-slider interaction and the tile pipeline, and wrote the plain-language layer notes so a parish council could use the same view as a coastal geologist.

Internal tool · Renewable operator

Relay Grid Monitor

A map-first monitoring view for substation health, built with control-room staff on shift. The redesign replaced a tabular alert queue with a spatial triage model, and introduced a colour and shape system that still reads correctly for colour-blind operators on a dimmed night display.

Wayfinding · National park partner

Trailhead Wayfinding System

A route and signage system spanning printed trailhead panels and a low-bandwidth mobile map. I authored the shared symbol set, the difficulty grading logic and the offline tile strategy, then documented it as a kit the park's own team now extends without us.

03 Experience

Employment history

2023 —
Present

Senior Geospatial Systems Designer

Northline Cartography Collective

  • Lead designer on public atlas and monitoring engagements, from discovery through production handover.
  • Built the studio's shared cartographic component library and its accessibility review checklist, now used on every client project.
  • Mentor two designers and pair with the data team on schema decisions before interface work begins.

2020 —
2023

Product Designer, Mapping

Avenir Terrain

  • Owned the map surface of a field-survey platform used by utility and environmental crews on tablets.
  • Introduced offline-first interaction patterns after running field sessions with crews working outside network coverage.
  • Shipped the platform's first keyboard-complete map controls and tested them with assistive-technology users.

2017 —
2020

Cartographer & Front-End Developer

Studio Pelago

  • Produced print and interactive maps for museums, publishers and planning consultations.
  • Moved the studio's delivery from static exports to a vector-tile workflow, cutting revision cycles on long projects.

2015 —
2017

GIS Analyst

Harbourmoor Water Authority

  • Maintained the asset and catchment datasets behind maintenance planning.
  • Automated the recurring flood-risk reporting pack, which had previously been assembled by hand each quarter.

05 Education

Education & credentials

2013 — 2015

MSc Geographic Information Science

Westmoor University. Thesis on communicating uncertainty in shoreline-change mapping for non-specialist readers.

2010 — 2013

BA Geography & Visual Communication

Lindholm College. Joint programme combining physical geography with typography and information design.

Advanced spatial statistics (short course, 2024) and remote sensing with open satellite archives (short course, 2022).

06 Writing & talks

Thinking shared in public

Talk · 2026

“The legend is the interface”

A conference session on treating map legends as primary navigation rather than an afterthought pinned to a corner.

Essay · 2025

Drawing uncertainty without hiding it

Written for a cartography journal on honest visual treatments for survey data with uneven confidence.

Workshop · 2024

Maps that work offline

A half-day practical workshop for civic technologists on tile budgets, caching and graceful degradation.
